Keeping your aligners clean is just as important as wearing them consistently. Since aligners are worn for about 20 to 22 hours daily, bacteria, plaque and food debris can build up quickly if they are not cleaned well. This may lead to stains, odours, gum irritation or treatment delays.
Simple habits such as rinsing aligners after removal, brushing before reinserting them and storing them properly can help maintain hygiene throughout treatment.
Generally, clear aligners should be cleaned at least twice a day, usually during your morning and evening oral hygiene routine.
However, you may need to clean them more often if you drink coffee regularly, smoke or snack frequently, as stains and odours can build up faster. Even though most aligner trays are changed every 1 to 2 weeks, proper cleaning is still important throughout treatment.
Cleaning your clear aligners should be part of your daily routine from the start of treatment. Since they sit close to your teeth and gums for most of the day, bacteria and plaque can build up quickly if you do not clean them properly.
You should clean your aligners at least twice daily, usually in the morning and before bed. Rinsing them during the day can also help remove saliva and debris.
Rinse your aligners gently with lukewarm water each time you remove them. This helps wash away saliva, food particles and bacteria before residue dries on the trays.
Avoid using hot water, as heat may change the shape of the aligners. Even small changes can affect how the trays fit against your teeth.
Gentle brushing helps remove plaque and surface debris that rinsing alone may not clear. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your aligners without scratching the plastic.
Avoid hard-bristled brushes, as they may create tiny scratches that make the trays look cloudy over time and trap bacteria more easily.
Avoid cleaning your aligners with toothpaste, as some formulations contain abrasive particles that may dull or scratch the tray surface.
Instead, use mild, clear soap or a cleaning product recommended by your dentist. These can help remove bacteria and reduce odours without damaging the aligner material.
Rinse your aligners thoroughly to remove any remaining soap or cleaning solution. Residue left on the trays may cause an unpleasant taste or irritation inside the mouth.
Once clean, place the aligners back onto freshly brushed teeth.
Clear aligners are meant to look discreet, but they can become stained or cloudy when exposed to coloured drinks, food residue or poor cleaning habits.
Odours may also develop when bacteria build up on the trays. Simple habits such as rinsing aligners after removal, brushing before reinserting them and storing them properly can help keep them cleaner and fresher during daily wear.
Aligners should generally be removed before eating meals or snacks. Chewing while wearing aligners may damage the trays or trap food particles against the teeth. Certain foods may also stain the aligners directly, especially strongly coloured sauces, spices or acidic foods.
Coffee, tea, red wine and other coloured beverages may stain clear aligners over time, making the trays look yellow or cloudy. Mild cloudiness can happen with normal wear, but significant staining, cracks or distortion should not be ignored.
Avoid hot drinks while wearing aligners, as heat may affect their shape and fit. If your aligners no longer sit properly against your teeth, do not try to reshape them at home using hot water or manual pressure. Consult your dentist for advice.
Brushing after meals helps remove food particles, sugars and plaque before you place the aligners back on your teeth. Flossing can also help clear debris from areas between the teeth that brushing may miss.
Without proper cleaning, bacteria and food debris may become trapped between the aligners and tooth surfaces for several hours.
Some patients may notice a drier mouth when wearing aligners for long periods. Since saliva helps wash away bacteria and protect the teeth and gums, dryness may contribute to bad breath and plaque build-up.
Drink water regularly throughout the day to keep your mouth hydrated and help rinse away bacteria while wearing your aligners.
Avoid wrapping your aligners in tissue paper or napkins, as they may be accidentally thrown away during meals. Leaving them exposed on tables or bathroom counters can also increase contact with bacteria.
Use a storage case whenever your aligners are not in your mouth. This helps protect them from dust, dirt, damage, heat exposure and misplacement. Remember to clean the case regularly, as bacteria can also build up inside the container.
If you are considering clear aligners, a dental assessment can help determine whether they are suitable for your teeth, bite and oral health. During the consultation, the dental team can assess your alignment concerns and explain the available orthodontic options.
At SEPA Dental, patients can discuss clear aligner treatment plans based on their tooth positioning and bite concerns. Book a consultation with us to learn more about clear aligners and the treatment process.
