What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants serve as a modern and permanent replacement for missing teeth. These implants are meant to be safe, natural-looking, and predictable to match the shape of your regular teeth. Through dental implants, you can restore regular chewing function and regain a complete smile.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants take the form of artificial tooth roots that are surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Once the root has been securely fastened, a dental implant specialist is able to attach replacements such as crowns, dental bridges and dentures in their position.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for dental implants. Depending on the condition of your teeth, your jaw structure and your oral health, your dentist may recommend different types of implants.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Benefits of Dental Implants

Replacing missing teeth with a set of dental implants offers both functional and aesthetic advantages. Once implants are securely anchored into the jawbone, patients are able to exert a strong biting force without slippage or discomfort. These implants are designed to closely resemble your surrounding teeth, and by using them to fill gaps between your teeth, you can regain a confident and natural-looking smile. Dental implants have the benefit of being highly durable and stable, providing a permanent fix for your missing teeth.

Types of Dental Implant Treatments

There are several different types of implants that a specialist may recommend after a dental consultation.

Single Tooth Implant

Single Tooth Implant

This type of implant is used to replace a gap in a single missing tooth. It can also be used when there are multiple missing teeth in separate regions of the mouth. Each gap will then be filled individually with a different implant.

Dental Bridge

Dental Bridge

If a patient is missing multiple adjacent teeth, it may not be practical to drill separate holes and place individual implants for each gap. Instead, a dentist can use a small number of implants to support an entire dental bridge. This bridge implant closes the gap, restoring chewing function and completely replacing the missing teeth.

All-on-4

All-on-4

For patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth, an all-on-4 bridge allows a dental implant specialist to mount an artificial arch on a limited number of implants. This serves as a permanent alternative to removable dentures.

Our Dental Implant Procedure

1. Initial Consultation

Before obtaining a dental implant, you will require an initial consultation, where the dentist assesses your oral health, jawbone condition, and suitability for dental implants. This step allows dental specialists to understand your concerns and treatment goals.

2. Treatment Planning and Implant Customisation

After your assessment, your dentist creates a personalised treatment plan based on your bite, jawbone quality, and overall dental structure. This planning stage focuses on selecting an implant approach that your jaw can safely support while providing long-term stability and natural function.

At this stage, implants are selected based on how they are positioned in relation to the jawbone, rather than how many teeth are being replaced.

- Endosteal Implants

This approach involves placing the implant directly into the jawbone, allowing it to integrate with the surrounding bone over time. It is the most commonly used method and is suitable for patients with adequate jawbone density and volume.

- Root Form Implants

These implants are a form of jawbone-placed implant designed to mimic the shape of a natural tooth root. Their shape allows biting forces to be distributed in a way that closely resembles a natural tooth, making them well suited for replacing individual missing teeth when sufficient bone is present.

- Subperiosteal Implants

In some cases, implants may be placed on top of the jawbone but beneath the gum tissue. This approach may be considered for patients with limited jawbone volume who are not suitable candidates for implants placed directly into bone without additional bone-support procedures.

3. Surgical Implants

Once your dental implant specialist has finalised your surgical plan and determined the right fit, the implant is placed into the jawbone under controlled and sterile conditions. This procedure is performed with precision and care to ensure proper positioning that creates a strong foundation for the replacement tooth.

4. Post-operative Healing and Integration

After surgery, you will require a healing period for the implant to integrate with the jawbone. This process helps secure the implant in place and ensures long-term stability before the final restoration is fitted.

5. Final Dental Implant Placement

Once healing is complete, the final dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, is attached to the implant. This restores full function and appearance, completing the dental implant procedure.
